Question: I like the Mourvedre grape in some southern Rhone red wines like Chateauneuf du Pape. Is there another name for that grape or region where I can find it?
Answer: I understand your preference for that ripe earthy wild herbs gamey spicy style. It really shows well in the very old vines of 80% Mourvèdre in 2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Hommage a Jacques Perrin”. Also discover the historic Bandol of Domaine Tempier. You also might check out the same grape outside France going under the name of Monastrell or Mataro. You can find this same grape (often in a blend) in wines from Spain, Australia and the United States of America. Seek out a recent vintage of Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs in Dry Creek Valley in California for their excellent blend using some Mataro with dominant Syrah and Grenache.
