Dirt Candy by chef Amanda Cohen and artist Ryan Dunlavey is the cookbook I’ve prepared my whole life to review. Dirt Candy is the highly popular vegetarian restaurant in New York owned and run by Amanda Cohen. The name, of course, refers to vegetables that are featured in all of her dishes. To tell the story of her restaurant she chose to write a graphic novel or comic book. While the format is called a graphic novel that isn’t really accurate. The book is a cookbook and biography. Amanda tells the story how she got to where she is, why she cooks what she cooks and why she charges what she charges (spoiler alert: it’s expensive to run a restaurant in NYC). The cartoon style art speeds the story along. The recipes are functional. Even if you don’t care about vegetarian cooking, you will enjoy the story.

Thanks for the note Chris. I’ll look for the book. Jan and I went to Dirt Candy a few years ago and liked it a lot. That says a lot for me, because I’m a true carnivore.
