The Story of Sushi is really two books in one. The first is a straightforward book that covers the history and evolution of sushi, first in Japan and later to the US. This part of the book also covers some detail on the technique of making sushi which will increase your appreciation and the manners of eating sushi. Yes, you should use your fingers and no, shouldn’t kill the subtle flavors by overusing the soy sauce.
The second story follows a young woman who enters the California Sushi Academy to find herself. It’s sort of an Eat, Love, Pray for the fish-eating set. As sappy as the story is, I couldn’t believe how much I was rooting for the protagonist towards the end of the book. Pick up the book for what you’ll learn about sushi, but you’ll stay for Kate.
